Palakkad: A 27-year-old man died after he was beaten up by a gang of people for allegedly trying to steal a bike at Olavakkode in Palakkad district last night.
The deceased was identified as Rafeeq, son of Malampuzha native Mustafa.
The Palakkad North police have taken three people into custody over the incident that happened at Olavakkode Junction around 1.45am on Friday.
The gang thrashed Rafeeq, alleging that he was trying to steal the bike that was parked in front of a shop, according to the police. Rafeeq soon collapsed and died.
A few local residents prevented the gang from fleeing the spot after the incident. The police were called in and they took the assailants into custody.
Cops suspect that more people are involved in the incident. They are checking the CCTV footage at various places in Olavakkode to nab other assailants.
Rafeeq's body was shifted to the mortuary of the Palakkad district hospital.
