Kasaragod: A court in Kanhangad has remanded a CPM branch secretary in judicial custody after he was arrested for allegedly raping his wife's elder sister, a 58-year-old woman, at least twice. He was booked for repeated rape under Section 376 (n) of the IPC, said Ambalathara Station House Officer.
The accused, a 50-year-old concrete worker, was arrested a week ago, but it came out in public now after his photograph was widely shared in party WhatsApp groups. The accused is the secretary of the CPM's branch named after Susheela Gopalan in Pullur-Periya panchayat. He was elected as the secretary in the Branch Conference held in September 2024 in the run-up to the 24th Party Congress.
After his arrest, the party removed him from the post of branch secretary. According to the complaint, the first assault happened in 2022, but she did not come forward to file the complaint, fearing societal stigma.
But as his alleged advances continued, the woman approached the police. Neighbours said that the complainant, a widow with two children, and the accused lived in two separate houses but in the same ancestral property of the complainant's mother.
