Kochi: Various community outfits on Wednesday staged a protest against the delay in finding a solution to the Munambam land dispute between the residents of the coastal area and the Waqf Board. The protestors demanded that the state government release the Justice (retd) C N Ramachandran Commission report. The judicial commission appointed by the government to study the land dispute had submitted its report in May.
Inaugurating the sit-in in front of the collectorate, Joseph Jude, the vice president of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC), asked the government to call the Munambam residents for a discussion based on the judicial commission report. “The delay by the state government in the issue will cause huge consequences in near future,” Jude said.
Representatives of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council, Kerala Region Latin Catholic Bishops Council, Kudumbi Seva Samajam, SNDP Yogam, Kerala Latin Catholic Association and Kerala Latin Catholic Womens Association, Kerala Catholic Youth Movement joined the Munambam Bhoosamrakshana Samithi in the protest meet. A march was taken out from the Municipal Office to the southern gate of Collectorate ahead of the meet. The protesters included priests and laity from Varappuzha and Kottappuram dioceses as well as leaders of the Kudumbi, Vettuva and Dheevara communities.
The protest was staged even as the uncertainty over the properties of 610 families in Munambam continues. The legal dispute between the residents and the Waqf Board has been going on for a while even as political parties keep blaming each other for the plight of the affected families.
The BJP had promised the Munambam residents to find a solution to the land dispute through the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 though its political rivals have called it an eyewash.
The judicial commission was appointed by the state government last November to identify the ownership of the disputed land in Munambam after the affected residents started a series of protests against the Waqf Board claim. Before submitting his report, Justice Nair had told media that the land dispute can be resolved if the Kerala government acquires the land for a public purpose as per the provisions of the existing Waqf Act.
