Kondotty: The parents of Ashwatha(16), a differently abled girl who died from pneumonia on Wednesday, have accused Kozhikode Medical College Hospital of medical negligence. They claim that the hospital denied her an ICU bed, stating ventilators would only be available if another patient died.

Ashwatha’s mother, Nishala, had written to Health Minister Veena George on July 16, highlighting the problems faced by her daughter at the hospital. “My daughter, who is 16 years old, is differently abled. She was admitted to a private hospital in Kondotty due to pneumonia. As per the doctors’ advice, we shifted her to Kozhikode Medical College on 13 night. After making us wait at the casualty until morning, she was moved to a ward. Doctors ignored her even though her oxygen dropped to dangerous levels. They urged us to shift her again to a private hospital, claiming that there weren’t any vacant beds,” her letter reads.

Although Ashwatha was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode, the family was forced to move her to another private hospital by Wednesday night as they couldn’t afford the exorbitant hospital bills. Ashwatha died soon after.  A student of BUDS School in Cherukavu, Ashwatha was the daughter of Suresh and Nishala from Pulikkal. She also has two siblings, Ashwani and Athish.
