Idukki: A tourist tragically lost his life after falling into a 200-foot deep gorge near Vagamon on Thursday night. The deceased is Tobias, a native of Ernakulam.
The incident happened around 9 pm at Chathanpara, known for its steep cliffs, along the Kanjar – Pullikkanam – Vagamon road. Tobias is believed to have accidentally slipped and fallen into the gorge.
Following the incident, Tobias's friends, who were with him at the time, alerted the authorities. Fire and Rescue personnel from Moolamattom and Thodupuzha rushed to the scene.
Rescue efforts were extremely challenging due to heavy mist and adverse weather conditions. Dense fog delayed the initial response by the Moolamattom fire force, prompting the Thodupuzha unit to be called in for assistance.
Using ropes and aided by searchlights, including an ask light, the rescue team bravely descended into the gorge. After several hours of strenuous effort, the body was recovered at around 3 am on Friday.
His body has been shifted to Idukki District Hospital, where post-mortem procedures will be carried out before handing it over to the family. Kanjar police have registered a case and begun an investigation. More details surrounding the accident are expected to emerge following further inquiry.
