Thodupuzha: The grand old bell has always been an enemy of students who come late to school or college. The bell that would ring at the right time had landed many in trouble. So, they found a solution to beat the bell that bothered them. Steal the bell!
The metal bell that was stolen around quarter of a century ago was returned to the college campus in a recent alumni meet. Those who took the bell returned it in the presence of their beloved friends and teachers. The sweet sound of nostalgia reverberated at the 25th anniversary meetup of the first batch of students at Thodupuzha College of Engineering.
The students of 1996 – 2000 batch who used to come late to the college had to meet the principal before entering their classes. A student who was not allowed to attend class for arriving late decided to steal the bell that rings everyday at the right time.
He untied the bell without anyone noticing and hid it under his classmate’s cot in the hostel. He remembered about the bell ‘resting’ under the cot only after the course ended and it was time to vacate the hostel. Unsure whether to return the bell or not, the friend decided to take it home.
The first batch of students ‘confessed’ to their crime at the alumni meet in the presence of their then principal PV Antony. The good-hearted principal who was gracious about it said, “I have forgiven you’. The bell will now be kept at the college.
