Thodupuzha: The much-anticipated Nellappara–Madakkathanam Bypass remains incomplete, with citizens blaming government apathy for the delay. Despite requiring only a bridge and land acquisition for 1.5 km of road to complete the project, no significant steps have been taken. The bypass, which starts from Nellappara near Karinkunnam and merges with the Muvattupuzha–Thodupuzha Road near Madakkathanam via Purappuzha and Angamvetty, spans 6 kilometres. While the first stretch, from Nellappara to Purappuzha, has been completed, progress on the remaining sections has been sluggish.

The second stretch, from Purappuzha to Angamvetty, requires only road widening. The final stretch, from Angamvetty to Madakkathanam, is stuck due to pending land acquisition. Although a Section 11(1) notification has already been issued for land in the Ernakulam district, delays in the Idukki district continue to stall the project.

Funds for the socio-environmental impact assessment and related preliminary work—essential for land acquisition—are yet to be allocated. Officials say work can begin immediately once the funds are released.

An estimate of ₹38 crore for the third stretch has already been approved, and a tender was allotted for the construction of a bridge. Residents are now demanding that the suspended bridge work be resumed and that the remaining land acquisition and construction be expedited without further delay.

Residents on both sides of the Thodupuzha River are urging authorities to take proactive steps to push the project forward. The bypass, first included in the 2001 state budget following efforts by former minister P J Joseph and support from various political groups, has received renewed allocation in the latest state budget as well.
