Liquor break for TP murder case convicts: Visuals show Kodi Suni outside Kannur bar

Kannur: Two days after three police officers were suspended for allowing TP Chandrasekharan murder case convict Kodi Suni and two fellow convicts to consume alcohol while in custody, visuals emerged on Sunday showing the convicts outside a bar in Kannur

In the footage, convicts Kodi Suni, Muhammad Shafi, and Shinoj are seen drinking liquor with friends near a car parked outside Victoria Bar in Thalassery. On July 17, they were taken to the Thalassery Additional District Court for a trial in the Mahe double murder case. Reports suggest that the convicts were escorted to the bar by police officers during the court’s lunch break.

Suni, Shafi, and Shinoj, who are currently lodged at Kannur Central Jail, were allegedly taken to the bar under the pretext of having lunch.

According to procedure, convicts must be accompanied by police officers at all times when taken outside prison. However, in the video, no police personnel are seen near the convicts as they consume alcohol and food from a vehicle parked outside the bar. It is believed that the liquor was brought and served by friends of the convicts in the presence of the police.

Following an internal inquiry, Kannur District Police Chief suspended three civil police officers—Vaisakh, Vineesh, and Jishnu—from the AR Camp.

Reacting to the incident, MLA KK Rema, wife of slain RMP leader TP Chandrasekharan, told Manorama News that Kodi Suni and his gang “rule Kannur Central Jail.” She added that she was not surprised that the police allowed the convict to drink alcohol.

Amid mounting criticism, the jail department has revoked the parole granted to Kodi Suni.
