Thiruvananthapuram: Amid mounting complaints about the draft voters’ list published ahead of the local body elections in Kerala, State Election Commissioner A Shahjahan on Thursday announced that the deadline for updating the list has been extended to August 12. Previously, the deadline for revising the voters’ list was set for August 7.

The Election Commission took this decision after Opposition Leader VD Satheesan submitted a letter requesting an extension of at least 15 days.

In his letter to the Election Commissioner, Satheesan noted that only 15 days had been given for new additions after the voters’ list was published on July 23. He pointed out that the online process for adding and correcting names, as well as transferring names from one ward to another, had faced technical glitches across multiple regions.

He also stated that many individuals were unable to register due to these issues and that several names from the previous voters’ list had been omitted from the current draft.

KPCC President Sunny Joseph and BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar also sent letters to the Election Commission requesting an extension of the deadline for the voters’ list revision.

Meanwhile, the draft list has come under criticism for duplicate entries and the inclusion of deceased individuals. Several voters who had participated in the previous election found their names missing from the rolls published ahead of the 2025 local body polls.
