Thiruvananthapuram: Dr Haris Chirakkal, head of the Urology Department at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) Thiruvananthapuram, said on Monday that some of his colleagues had tried to backstab him, and that he did not know why.

"I have known them for many years. We studied together and have worked side by side for over 30 years. Their actions have deeply affected me. I never thought they would do something like this," Dr Haris told the media.

Earlier, he maintained that the claims he had raised were legitimate and that the entire faculty stood by him, with support pouring in from many quarters. However, Dr Haris alleged that some had tried to send him to jail and possibly even to his death "for the sake of some silver coins."

When confronted with repeated questions, Jabbar and Sunilkumar were evasive in their replies. This was widely perceived as a clear ploy to put Dr Haris under a cloud of suspicion.

Dr Haris said the duo had called the press conference after assuring him there were no issues and asking him to remain calm, saying there was no problem. "I don't know why they did this. It was unexpected," he said, adding that they had not sought any clarification from him before holding the press conference.

He further stated that he needs their cooperation to run the Urology Department and seeks their support, as he is just an employee at the hospital. "There must be friendship and cooperation among medical college employees. We have to work together to save patients — it's essential," he said.

Meanwhile, a decision has been taken to remove the Director of Medical Education (DME), the principal, and the superintendent from the official WhatsApp group of the doctors’ organisation Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) in connection with the alleged attempt to implicate Dr Haris in the theft of equipment from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

The Thiruvananthapuram unit office-bearers posted a message on WhatsApp requesting that those holding administrative positions step down from the group. The message was posted on Saturday following the controversy.

It was in this same group that Dr Haris had alleged there was an attempt to frame him in the equipment theft case and had sought the organisation’s help.
