Pulppally: Transporting the body of Vijayan, a resident of the Chaamappara Paniya hamlet, turned into a nightmare for his relatives, who had to wade through knee-deep sludge in heavy rain over a long distance. Vijayan passed away at his home in Channothukolli on Saturday. To take his body to his ancestral home yesterday, his relatives had to brave extremely challenging conditions.
Even walking along the muddy earthen road and the ridge of a paddy field proved nearly impossible. The Panamaram Block Panchayat had allocated ₹19 lakh to make the 900-metre stretch of road from Channothukolli DPEP School to Unnathi motorable. However, work has been delayed due to the non-availability of land for road construction along the middle portion of the stretch.
Chaamappara hamlet is home to just 20 families and has no vehicular access. Residents face immense hardships in transporting patients, including those requiring dialysis, to hospitals. Raw materials for house construction must be carried manually. During heavy rains, houses are also at risk of inundation when the Kannaram river swells.
