Popular tusker Erattupetta Ayyappan dies, leaving fans in grief

Erattupetta: Erattupetta Ayyappan, a domestic elephant which enjoyed a huge fan following and was a major attraction at hundreds of temple festivals in Kerala, passed away at 11.30 am on Tuesday. The tusker was 55 years old.

Veterinarians Dr Saseendradev and Dr U Gireesh, who were treating Ayyappan, said the elephant had succumbed to a urinary infection. The tusker belonged to Thomas P Thomas of Paravanparambil, Vallikkunnel. The popular elephant will be buried on the premises of the house under the supervision of Forest Department officers after a necropsy on Wednesday.

Ayyappan was among the last elephants auctioned at the Kodanad elephant shelter. The young tusker, then aged seven, was purchased in an auction by Joseph Thomas and Ethamma, parents of Thomas, on December 20, 1977. The elephant was then addressed as Araam. Possessing a strong and dark body, a long tail, and a perfect trunk and tusks, Ayyappan later carried the main deity at several festivals, including the renowned Thrissur Pooram.

Known for his quiet and peaceful nature, Ayyappan took part in the elephant processions of all major festivals in the state.
