Alappuzha: A young athlete died after a lorry rammed into her scooter. The victim has been identified as Lakshmi Lal (19), daughter of Vellikad residents Mani Lal and Manju. The accident occurred around 4.30 pm on Thursday near the Kerala Bank at Kalavoor, south of Poonthoppu Church, Alappuzha.
Lakshmi Lal, an athlete, was on her way to Prithikulamkara stadium for training along with Alappuzha-based veteran athlete Vineetha when the mishap took place. Vineetha was riding the scooter when a trailer lorry, overtaking them, hit the vehicle, throwing both onto the road.
Lakshmi suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to a private hospital in Thumpoly, but she succumbed to her injuries. A BCom student at Ambalappuzha Government College, Lakshmi, had won district-level titles in the 800m and 1500m athletics events and had also represented the district in state meets.
