Panoor: Works on the Thuruthimukku Bridge, spanning the Mahe River and connects Kannur and Kozhikode districts, is finally set to resume soon.
The project, being implemented under the KIIFB scheme, is estimated to cost ₹15.17 crore and is being executed by the Uralungal Labour Construction Society.
Funding for the project was secured following the efforts of K K Shylaja MLA in 2019. Although initial works had begun, progress stalled due to difficulties in acquiring land for the approach roads, leaving only 10 percent of the work completed.
The bridge project includes the construction of a 175-meter-long approach road on the Kidanji-side and a 60-meter-long approach road on the Edacherry-side. Work is now set to resume after clearing technical and legal hurdles, following the intervention of local legislator K P Mohanan.
Once completed, the bridge that links Edacherry in Kozhikode with Kidanji in Panoor municipality, Kannur, will drastically reduce travel distances for residents on both sides of the inter-district border. Currently, locals have to take a long detour via either the Peringathoor Bridge or Kanjirakkadavu Bridge to cross the Mahe River.
The 250-meter-long Thuruthimukku Bridge is being constructed in the bow-string arch (tied arch) design, combining functionality with architectural elegance.
