Malayora Highway is becoming increasingly dangerous due to over-speeding and delayed restoration works.

Iritty: Complaints are mounting over the Malayora ( Hill Valley) Highway turning into an accident-prone stretch, with over-speeding vehicles and unscientific road construction emerging as major concerns.

Drivers and local residents allege serious lapses in straightening the curves and in implementing proper safety measures, even as the road is being upgraded to state highway standards. They point out that vehicles transporting fruits, vegetables, and poultry stocks from Karnataka often speed recklessly through the stretch, adding to the danger.

The delay in completing restoration works along the Vallithodu–Manathana reach of the highway has further worsened the situation. Residents complain that no scientific safety measures have been put in place despite the road being filled with steep curves, slopes and inclines.

Two months ago, an autorickshaw driver lost his life in an accident at the Kalivalavu curve near Kottaukappara. Just yesterday, another accident was reported in Edoor town due to the delay in reconstructing a road portion dismantled for drainage work. Following strong protests, the works have since resumed.

Earlier, locals had blocked attempts by authorities to carry out temporary patchwork by filling potholes instead of completing proper tarring. They argue that the failure to complete restoration works in a time-bound manner is directly contributing to frequent accidents.
