Kumily: A doctor and his team at the Kumily Family Health Centre in Idukki went beyond their duty to save the life of a man found unconscious on the roadside. Dr Kishwar, nurse Ramya and attender Rani shifted the patient, Rajesh (30), a native of Gudalur in Tamil Nadu, from Kumily to Theni Medical College Hospital in Tamil Nadu for treatment. The doctor and his team also stayed on as caregivers for Rajesh at the hospital until his relatives arrived.
Rajesh was first brought to the Family Health Centre by the police after he collapsed on the side of the national highway at Chelimada in Kumily. On examination, doctors found him in a critical condition with a low heart rate and referred him to Theni Medical College.
However, confusion arose over who would accompany the patient across the state border. While the police tried to trace his relatives using an identity card found in his pocket, Dr Kishwar realised that precious time was being lost. Deciding not to wait, he accompanied Rajesh to Theni along with nurse Ramya and attender Rani.
As the health centre’s ambulance was under repair, the team quickly arranged an alternative vehicle. Soon after they left for Theni, the police managed to contact Rajesh’s relatives. The medical team returned to Kumily only after handing over Rajesh to his family and ensuring proper care at the hospital.
