Alappuzha: “My dear younger brother, please regard us as your brothers and come back from the sea.” This heartfelt plea, made by Arthunkal ASI Naseer, changed the mind of a young man who was preparing to end his life. In that moment, the 30-year-old ran towards the police, grasping the outstretched hands of Naseer and Civil Police Officer Shyam Lal, choosing life over despair.
It was a timely intervention that saved him. The man, a native of Alappuzha, had walked 16 kilometres from his home after writing a suicide note on the wall, determined to end his life at Mararikulam beach.
At 11:30 p.m. on September 23, the police control room received a call from the youth. Over the phone, he expressed his frustration with life and said he was about to commit suicide. Before hanging up, he added that no one would be responsible for his death and gave no further details.
The control room immediately alerted officers at the Arthunkal police station. ASI Naseer, ASI Sreevidya, and Senior CPO Shyam Lal informed the SHO and shared the location details. Using his mobile phone’s location, they tracked him to Mararikulam beach. Despite repeated calls, the youth did not respond.
When the police arrived, his phone location suggested he had already entered the sea. Heavy rain and darkness made it impossible to see exactly where he was standing. Eventually, the youth answered their calls, but attempts to persuade him failed, and he remained in the water south of Mararikulam beach.
With heavy waves lashing the shore and the fear that he might move deeper into the sea, the officers faced a tense situation. Finally, after assuring him that his problems would be addressed, ASI Naseer and CPO Shyam Lal waded into the water and pulled him to safety.
The police then took him to the station, listened to his concerns, and offered all possible support. He was later sent home with relatives, safe and with a renewed sense of hope.
