Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding a high-level probe into the alleged assault on Malayali students at Zakir Husain Delhi College. The students, identified as I D Ashwanth and K Sudhin, reportedly faced physical aggression from police officials on September 24.

Expressing concern, CM Vijayan urged strict action against any officers found guilty of misconduct. Reports also claim the students were allegedly forced to speak in Hindi, raising concerns over the harassment of students migrating across states for higher education.

“Students from different states travel across India for academic pursuits. Their language, culture and identity must be respected by the host communities,” said the Chief Minister, emphasising that law enforcement has a duty to protect citizens from such behaviour. “If police personnel engage in such acts, it could embolden others to harass students and residents who relocate for education or livelihood,” he added.

The letter called for an “impartial and comprehensive inquiry” to ensure fairness and accountability. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among the Malayali student community in Delhi, raising concerns over the treatment of out-of-state students and the responsibilities of law enforcement in safeguarding their rights. Authorities have been urged to conduct the investigation transparently and take appropriate disciplinary or legal action.
