Kochi: A woman and her friend were killed after their two-wheeler went out of control and crashed into a metro pillar at Chambakkara in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Sooraj KS (24), a native of Muttar in Alappuzha, and Swetha Ashok (25) of Pazhuvil in Thrissur. The accident took place around 12.45 am near Chambakkara Market, when their two-wheeler hit the metro pillar No. 953, police said.
According to Maradu police, both Sooraj and Swetha were working in Kochi. Sooraj was employed at an eatery in Kakkanad, while Swetha worked at a store in Forum Mall, Kundannur. On Friday night, Sooraj had gone to pick her up from the mall to drop her off at her accommodation. The crash occurred while they were on their way there.
The impact of the collision threw both riders onto the road. They were rushed to a private hospital in Vyttila, but doctors declared them dead soon after, the police said.
Preliminary investigation suggests that no other vehicle was involved in the incident. “It appears the rider lost control of the motorcycle, which led to the crash,” an officer said.
A case has been registered, and inquest proceedings have been completed. The bodies were handed over to their families after the post-mortem examination. The police said a scientific examination of the vehicle will be carried out as part of the probe.
