Vadakara: A fire broke out in a bakery located in the heart of the town. A major tragedy was averted thanks to the timely intervention of the bakery’s employees and the fire and rescue services. The backery is also flanked by a lodge and other commercial establishments.

The Station Cafe bakery, operating out of the Mugal Residence building along the busy Edody Railway Station Road, caught fire yesterday at 6 p.m. The fire was first noticed by bakery workers in the chimney attached to the oven.

Since another bakery and a lodge were located nearby, water was pumped from the building’s tank to douse the flames in the chimney, which extended above the three floors of he building.

Meanwhile, panic spread as the entire building was engulfed in smoke. Two units of the fire and rescue services pumped water into the bakery and extinguished the remaining fire in the chimney. Snacks were removed from the bakery as soon as smoke was detected. Local residents actively participated in the rescue efforts. Vehicles heading to and from the railway station were re-routed, causing a traffic block at Edody.

The bakery is owned by Moosa of Elavana in Kottappally. In addition to chips production, a tea stall was also operating alongside.The chimney and its exhaust system were damaged. Moosa said the total losses amounted to around ₹2 lakhs.

The rescue team , led by Senior Fire and Rescue Officer R Deepak, included officers K P Biju, M T Rashid, T Shijesh, Manoj Kizhakkekkara, K M Vijesh, O K Amalraj; drivers K Subair and K Santhosh; home guards K Sathyan and C Hariharan; and members of the civil defence force.
