Pathanamthitta: Lathakumari (61), an ASHA worker from Keezhvaipur, who was critically injured after being set on fire during a robbery, died on Friday night at Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

The attack occurred on October 9, when her neighbour Sumayya, a resident of the police quarters, allegedly broke into Lathakumari’s home, assaulted her, stole her gold jewellery, and set the house on fire. Lathakumari managed to escape and run to the Keezhvaipur police station for help.

Police said Sumayya, wife of a civil police officer, had suffered heavy losses in stock trading and borrowed money through mobile loan apps. She allegedly demanded Lathakumari’s gold to cover her losses. The stolen jewellery—one gold chain and three bangles—was later recovered from the toilet flush at the police quarters.

Sumayya has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, robbery, forcible intrusion, and wrongful confinement. Authorities said her husband was unaware of her actions.
