Cherupuzha: The 40-year-old Perumkudal Bridge, the main link along the Cherupuzha–Pambankallu–Mulapra Road, is on the verge of collapse.

The underside of the bridge and its iron rods have rusted significantly, while concrete and granite pieces have begun falling off the bridge’s pillars. Prolonged heavy rainfall has intensified the flow of water through the canal beneath, leading to the erosion of concrete and granite from the bridge’s pillars.

This road offers a convenient route for smaller vehicles from Cherupuzha to reach Mulapra, Prapoyil, Kokkadavu, Thirumeni, Muthuvam and Thabor, bypassing the busy high-range highway. The deteriorating condition of the bridge has left nearby residents anxious. During the previous flooding, water had reached close to their homes.

If the bridge collapses, it will completely disrupt vehicular movement toward Pambankallu and Perumkudal. There is also a risk of nearby agricultural fields and homes being flooded. Concerned residents have submitted a memorandum to the authorities, demanding immediate restoration of the bridge.
