Kottayam: In an online meeting convened by State Election Commissioner A Shajahan on Saturday, District Collectors reported that all arrangements for Phase 1 of the local body polls have been completed. They said measures were in place to prevent law-and-order issues, especially during the final hours of campaigning. The district police conducted route marches within station limits to ensure security.
Collectors were instructed to ensure drinking water, seating, and proper queue management at polling stations. Special facilities for differently-abled voters have also been arranged.
The Commissioner directed that educational institutions designated as polling stations should be granted leave on the day before polling, and those serving as counting centres should be closed on counting day. A complete ban on liquor must be enforced for 48 hours before polling ends and on the counting day.
He also asked officials to take precautions in sensitive polling stations and ensure safe access for voters in wildlife-affected areas in hilly districts, with support from the Forest Department when needed.
The SEC also held online reviews with election observers and expenditure observers ahead of polling.
