Diya Binu Pulikkakandam took oath as Chairperson of the Pala Municipality in Kerala on Friday at the age of 21, becoming the youngest person in the country to hold the post. In an interview with Malayala Manorama, she spoke about her plans.

As Municipal Chairperson, what will be your priorities?
I plan to work together with all 25 councillors to ensure development and welfare. It is a huge responsibility, but I will sincerely work for the progress of Pala.

Your father, Binu Pulikkandam, narrowly missed becoming Municipal Chairperson last time. Now he has regained the post through his daughter. How do you feel?
Though everything happened by coincidence, I would call it ‘poetic justice’. I am really happy to become the Municipal Chairperson.

What are your development plans for the region?
Pala is one of the most important municipalities in the state. However, several projects are stalled or yet to take off due to fund shortage. I will review each of these projects and do my best to complete them. Major initiatives include modernising the General Hospital and Municipal Stadium. Waste management is also a major concern. We will explore tourism potential along with beautification of the town. Other priorities include women’s safety and improving residents' living standards.

Did you benefit from your father Binu’s political experience?
Certainly. My father became a councillor for the first time when I was one year old. I grew up watching him work as a politician and meeting people who came home seeking help. I used to note down the dates of his ward meetings and election-related activities and remind him.

Do you think Kerala Congress (M) suffered a setback in Pala?
For them, the election result is a punishment given by the people. They should accept the mandate. People wanted change — I was only a factor in it. I am happy to become the first Municipal Chairperson after a regime change in Pala. My goal is the overall development of the municipality, and I will try my best to achieve it.
