Kochi: A major fire broke out at Broadway here in the wee hours of Tuesday, gutting several shops and causing extensive damage. The blaze affected around five toy and fancy goods shops located in the Koluthara Bazaar building.

The fire reportedly broke out at Happy Toys, a shop operating at Koluthara Bazaar, and later spread to nearby shops and godowns. The shop is owned by Sreejith, a native of Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district.

The Fire and Rescue Services control room received the alert at around 1.00 am. Firefighters from the Club Road station, along with units from Gandhinagar, Aluva, Eloor, Mattancherry, Vypin, Aroor, North Paravur and Pattimattom, rushed to the spot. Nine fire station units, led by District Fire Officer Harikumar, worked together and brought the blaze fully under control after nearly two and a half hours.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have originated from waste materials stored nearby. “The flames spread through an adjacent shop and caught a tarpaulin sheet tied above one of the shops, causing the fire to spread to the upper floors,” Gandhinagar Fire Station officer Lalji P R told Onmanorama.
