Thenhipalam: Bengali workers have once again descended on the Kolakkattuchali fields under the Chelambra Perunniri Polder Committee for the Mundakan paddy harvest.

According to C E Moitheen Kutty, president of the polder committee, workers from Bengal have been assisting with the harvest here for the past six years. The harvest festival was inaugurated by Chelambra Panchayat member Girija  Unnikrishnan.

The Bengali workers are also employed for post-harvest tasks, including threshing. They are paid a daily wage of Rs. 1,100, in addition to being provided with lunch.

Though young, these workers are highly skilled and experienced in paddy cultivation, Moitheen Kutty noted. The first day’s harvest took place in Moitheen Kutty’s own fields on Tuesday, with harvesting in the plots of V Suresh Babu, . Vijayanandavalli, E  Koya, Erukattil Bifathima , Erukattil Ayishkutty, Mundakkadan etc are set to follow soon.
