Suicide bid by student: CUSAT engineering campus closed indefinitely

CUSAT

Kochi: The School of Engineering campus of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has been closed indefinitely after a student attempted suicide. The university has postponed all examinations scheduled for Wednesday.

A first-year civil engineering student cut a vein on his forearm after he was allegedly harassed by his seniors. His classmates said he was manhandled and threatened by the seniors, said to be SFI members. He was beaten up amid a strike organized by the student organization on Friday.

The student, a native of Malappuram, had complained to the principal but he was again waylaid by the seniors who threatened to finish him off, his classmates said. The student returned to his hostel room and attempted suicide. He is recuperating in a hospital in Kochi.

The Kalamassery police have registered a case. The School of Engineering management has closed the campus to avoid any untoward incident and asked the students to vacate the hostel.

The SFI insisted that they had nothing to do with the incident, which it claimed was a fallout of skirmishes among students related to Onam celebrations on the campus.
