How New Delhi is secured for I-Day

Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, security in Delhi has been stepped up to prevent any untoward incidents. The government has beefed up security across Delhi, including the area near the Red Fort, metro stations and the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

The prime minister is scheduled to address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort at 7:30 am to commence the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2018.

Since the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi, a bullet-prof transparent cabin was put up for prime ministers to address the gathering. However, in 2014, prime minister Narendra Modi asked his security office to remove the cabin and he addressed the nation in 'plain sight.' On the 71st Independence Day, the prime minister is again expected to deliver his speech at the Red Fort without this 'safety cover.'

This is a hard time for security agencies. Building a security fortress around the Red Fort, they make sure nothing goes wrong, when the whole world watches the colourful celebrations on the historic day.
