A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at 10.38 am (04.38 GMT) near the city of Narsingdi, located about 33 kilometres from the densely populated capital, Dhaka.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, but USGS’s PAGER system — which provides preliminary assessments of earthquake impact — indicated the potential for “significant casualties” and damage.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said tremors were felt in several parts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, as the quake jolted Bangladesh’s Narsingdi region. Several people in Kolkata and nearby districts rushed out of buildings as a precaution. No injuries or property damage were immediately reported.
