Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar said KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) will launch a cricket team.
"It has been decided to launch a KSRTC cricket team," Ganesh Kumar said during the felicitation ceremony of a KSRTC employees' cricket tournament in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
"I have given instructions to the CMD (chairman and managing director) to start one with the best players from the tournament," the minister said.
He added that KSRTC had volleyball and football teams in the past, but never a cricket team. KSRTC had a good team competing in state-level and inter-state football tournaments in the 1980s, but the squad was disbanded.
It is unclear whether the KSRTC cricket team will compete in the district and zonal cricket-ball tournaments.
Among the various state departments, the Kerala Police and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) have a strong presence in state sports. The KSEB's basketball and volleyball teams, especially in the women's category, are among the best in South India.
Kerala Police has a quality men's football team that regularly supplies talents to the state's Santosh Trophy squad.
