AB de Villiers has reminded Indian Premier League (IPL) teams of the golden opportunity they passed up by not picking record-breaking South African batter Dewald Brevis in the auction.

The 22-year-old Brevis displayed an incredible range of shots in a record 56-ball 125 not out to power South Africa to a 53-run win over Australia in a T20 at Darwin the other day.

Brevis hit eight sixes and 12 boundaries to eclipse Faf du Plessis' South African record of 119 scored against the West Indies in 2015.

"There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly," de Villiers posted on X.

"CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. Mind boggling that he wasn’t picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub," added the former batting star.

Brevis went unsold in the IPL auction despite coming with much promise as a heavy hitter. He was only included toward the end of the season when MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings signed him up as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh.
