Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas was elected as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday.
The 45-year-old was elected to the key role at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai. He becomes the Board's 37th president, succeeding Roger Binny, who resigned last month after turning 70.
Devajit Saikia and Arun Dhumal were retained as BCCI secretary and IPL Governing Council chairman respectively, while Karnataka State Cricket Association chief and former India cricketer Raghuram Bhat was elected treasurer. Former treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia was appointed joint secretary, replacing Rohan Gauns Desai.
Manhas has never played for India, but he featured in 157 first-class matches and played 55 games in the IPL. He scored 9,714 runs in first-class cricket, making 27 centuries.
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who attended the AGM as representative of the Punjab Cricket Association, said having a cricketer at the helm helps the body. "It's a good decision and it's been happening for the last three terms, which is a great thing for the cricketers as well for him to give something back to the game," Harbhajan said.
