Former player Wasim Jaffer has given a befitting response to Indian aces Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, who allegedly insulted South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma with a derogatory term during the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
"It’s not the size of man in the fight, but the size of fight in the man. Well played, Bavuma," posted former India player Jaffer while crediting the batter for his 55 not out in the second innings, which was the highest score by any batter across three days.
As Jaffer rightly put it, Bavuma's impressive knock breathed life into the match as it helped the visitors raise a fighting total of 153, setting India a tricky target of 124 runs.
It was a conversation between Bumrah and Pant picked up by the stump mic that triggered the controversy. While discussing whether to take a DRS review for a leg before wicket against Bavuma in the first innings, Bumrah and Pant were heard referring to the batter as 'bauna', which roughly translates to 'dwarf' in Hindi.
At a little over 160 cm, Bavuma is the shortest member of the South African side. As heard from the stump mic, Bumrah allegedly tells Pant, 'bauna bhi to hai' (but he's a dwarf). Pant points to the impact above the knee and allegedly replies, 'haan bauna hai but ...' (yes, he's a dwarf but...).
Bumrah walks back and allegedly uses the word again, followed by a curse word in Hindi starting with 'b'. A few other Indian players, especially Ravindra Jadeja, can be seen smiling at these remarks.
