Captain Ben Stokes tried his best with a 152-ball 50 but could not save England from losing the Brisbane Test to Australia by eight wickets and trail the Ashes series 0-2. However, Stokes has refused to concede the battle for the urn, claiming his side can do what hasn't been done in 88 years — turn a 0-2 into a 3-2 series win.
The last team to make an incredible comeback was Don Bradman's Australia in the 1936-37 season of the Ashes. England won the Tests in Brisbane and Sydney to lead 2-0, before Bradman scored 270 to script a big win for Australia in Melbourne. The great man scored another double century in Adelaide to level the series before he scored 169 in the decider at Melbourne, which the hosts won by an innings and 200 runs to take the Ashes.
Is this English side capable of doing what Bradman's Australia did? "I absolutely believe in that dressing room," Stokes said post-match.
"We know we have to win these next three games. We won't shy away from the battle but we need to sort things out pretty quick if we want to bring the Ashes back to England," he said.
The remaining matches in the Ashes will be played in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. "They say Australia is not a place for weak men, and we are definitely not weak, but we need to find something," Stokes added. The third Test starts in Adelaide on December 17.
