A toe was all that separated Colombia from a famous victory over Portugal in one of the most intense contests of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Davinson Sanchez thought he had headed home a dramatic 90th-minute winner, only for a VAR review to rule him marginally offside, forcing both sides to settle for a goalless draw in their Group K clash at Miami Stadium.

The two sides combined for 37 attempts on goal, with Colombia alone registering 24, but exceptional goalkeeping, desperate defending and the narrowest of offside calls ensured neither team found the breakthrough.

Colombia dominated the opening stages of the game, but Portugal gradually grew into the contest after the first-half hydration break, making for an enthralling battle between two of the tournament's strongest sides.

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced a stunning save in the 17th minute after Colombia carved open the Portuguese defence with a swift counter-attack. Jhon Cordoba shrugged off a challenge from Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a powerful effort from 15 yards. Costa reacted brilliantly, stretching out his right arm to push the ball away. The rebound fell to Luis Díaz, whose follow-up effort was blocked behind for a corner.

The chance summed up Colombia's approach in the opening 25 minutes. The South Americans created the better opportunities, with Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez and Jhon Arias repeatedly troubling the Portuguese defence with their pace, movement and intricate passing in the final third.

Portugal, meanwhile, were more patient in possession. Unlike their South American opponents, they preferred to build from the back and gradually work their way forward. Although they struggled to create clear-cut openings early on, they looked increasingly dangerous as the half progressed.

Their first meaningful effort came from a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick. The veteran forward curled his strike over the Colombian wall, but goalkeeper Camilo Vargas was well positioned to gather comfortably.

Following the hydration break, Portugal began to assert themselves. Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix started finding more space between the lines, forcing Colombia onto the back foot and testing Vargas on several occasions.

The Colombian goalkeeper produced the save of the half in the 39th minute. A defensive slip gifted Fernandes possession just eight yards from goal, but Vargas reacted superbly to deny the midfielder with a point-blank save. Ronaldo attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick from the rebound but failed to make clean contact before Ruben Neves fired from distance, only for his effort to take an unnoticed deflection.

Portugal continued to threaten three minutes later when a long throw found Felix inside the box. The forward brought the ball down well but his touch took him slightly wide, and his stretching effort sailed over the crossbar.

Colombia, however, refused to retreat into their shell. In the 44th minute, they worked the ball neatly around the edge of the Portuguese area before James Rodriguez unleashed a right-footed effort from 20 yards, only for Renato Veiga to make a crucial block.

The closing minutes of the first half turned into an end-to-end contest before the teams went into the break still searching for the opening goal.

The second half was even more relentless, with attacks flowing from one penalty area to the other.

Jefferson Lerma tested Costa with a thunderous long-range effort before Felix released Ronaldo, only for the Portuguese captain to stray offside. Colombia introduced Luis Suarez on the hour mark, and the substitute immediately injected fresh energy into the attack.

Costa was called into action again in the 66th minute, producing another superb save to deny Arias after a flowing Colombian move. Colombia kept coming in waves, with James Rodriguez seeing a deflected effort sail just over before Suarez volleyed narrowly wide. At the other end, Portugal struggled to create sustained pressure as Colombia's midfield dictated the tempo.

Ruben Dias then produced one of the defensive moments of the match, heading the ball off the goal line with Costa beaten before the Portuguese goalkeeper made yet another crucial intervention moments later as Colombia piled on the pressure.

The dramatic finale arrived in the 90th minute. Sanchez headed home at the back post, sparking wild celebrations among the Colombian fans. Those celebrations were cut short after the assistant referee raised the flag, and VAR confirmed Sanchez had wandered offside by the narrowest of margins—barely the length of a toe.

The disallowed goal perfectly summed up a contest decided by the finest of margins. The draw made Colombia finish with seven points and will play Ghana next in the knockouts, while Portugal were second on five points to set up a round-of-32 game against Croatia.
