Markham, Canada: India’s Lakshya Sen settled for a bronze medal at the World Junior Badminton Championships as he went down fighting to top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semifinals here on Saturday.

The 17-year-old won a hard-fought opening game 22-20, but lost the next two 16-21 and 13-21.

Sen, who had beaten 17-year-old Vitidsarn in straight games in the final of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in July in Indonesia, failed to get going going in the decider.

It was India’s only medal in this edition of the world juniors and the first one since Sameer Verma bagged a bronze in 2011. Sai Praneeth and H S Prannoy also won bronze in 2010, while Saina Nehwal took home the gold in 2008.
