Vazhiyorakkada- tradition on a platter

It is difficult to miss 'Vazhiyorakkada' if you are driving down the MC Road towards Thiruvananthapuram. And once you have tasted the fare there, it is way too difficult to stay away from this restaurant. Located in Kuravankonam, just ahead of Kilimanoor town, this restaurant is a place you can visit with your family. The walls are decorated with the menu ranging from tea to the spread of the day. By the time you decide on the order, the waiter will be ready with a bottle of mineral water. Lunch here is a traditional affair. On a banana leaf; a real one. Mackerel head curry is a delicacy here. The best sea food available in the market – be it crab, lobster, squid, pomfret and pearlspot is served in the restaurant. The chicken curry, chicken purattu, tender chicken fry and country chicken liver purattu has a lot of fans. Vazhiyorakkada does not use artificial colours – nor does it use gas to cook most of the items. You can order ilayappam, idiyappam, puttu, appam, porotta, chapathi and tapioca to go with your curry. The key, is the right combination. Appam goes well with duck curry while many prefer chicken curry with idiyappam, says Mahesh, the owner of Vazhiyorakkada. If in case you do not find all of the listed items available during your visit to the place, do not feel disheartened. They can dish it up for you as soon as you place an order. 'We do not store food,' says Mahesh. Once you have discovered Vazhiyorakkada, it is difficult not to go there again. It becomes a habit. The food tastes awesome, thanks to the traditional way of cooking. May be this is one of the reasons why they had to hang a board in front of the shop declaring that they do not have any other branches.
