Kerala's Idukki district has countless majestic waterfalls, even as you head to the district braving its hilly terrain and hairpin curves. For a long time, Valanjanganam Falls near Kuttikkanam was merely one among them. With the advent of Instagram travel influencers who captured its beauty from numerous angles, the cascade is often considered the Idukki Falls with the most number of fans. 

What to see?
Valanjangan nestles amidst towering hills and thick greenery of Idukki. The drive through the high-range road near which it is located offers a stunning visual treat of lush mountain landscapes. The falls often serve as a natural rest stop for many weary travellers. Its misty air, cool climate, and scenic beauty combine to make it a perfect pit stop. 

Activity possibilities
The roadside is lined with small tea shops serving hot, frothy tea and crispy snacks. Street vendors with toys and trinkets, especially for children, also add to the charm of the location. While the waterfall can be viewed easily from the roadside, the adventurous lot often follow a small trail to the left to get even closer. This path leads to rocky outcrops near the base of the waterfall, allowing visitors to experience its full power up close.

It’s a popular spot for both photography and videography. Some even venture into the water for a quick dip. However, authorities generally discourage bathing here due to safety concerns, especially during unexpected mountain showers, which can rapidly increase water flow and bring along slippery stones, raising the risk of accidents.

Troops of small monkeys are another common sight along the roadside, often seen accepting food from passersby. The waterfall’s cinematic beauty has also made it a featured location in numerous Malayalam films.

Valanjanganam is surrounded by several other popular tourist spots like Panchalimedu, Kuttikkanam, Amachikottaram, Parunthumpara, and Charlie Kulam. Famous high-range attractions, such as Ottakathalamedu, Thekkady, and Vagamon, are also within easy reach.

How to reach Valanjanganam Falls
The falls are located about one kilometre from Murinjapuzha and five kilometres from Kuttikkanam along the Kottayam-Kumily state highway.
