The authorities have temporarily banned entry to Kannur's Paithalmala, a prominent tourist destination in the district's high ranges, following a devastating lightning strike. A woman named Anju died a few days ago in Manjapullu here after being struck by lightning. The authorities stated that visitors wouldn’t be allowed to enter Paithalmala until further notice. Anju, an employee of the revenue department in Cherupuzha, was killed after being struck by lightning in Manjapullu near Paithalmala. Her husband, Sonu, and a forest watcher, who were on the spot too, sustained severe injuries. Paithalmala trekking and tourism have been banned to ensure the safety of the visitors, as heavy rains and thunderstorms have been battering the area for the last few days. The restriction is likely to be in place until the weather improves in the region.
Lightning during trips: Safety tips
• Avoid standing in open spaces: Lightning always chooses high points on earth to strike. The risk of getting struck by lightning is higher if you are standing in an open space.
• Do not stand under tall trees: Singular trees that are tall may attract lightning. If you are in a forest, then always stand close to smaller trees.
• Avoid higher areas: It is dangerous to stand atop a hill or a building during a thunderstorm. It is safer to immediately move to a lower area.
• Do not lie down on the floor: Lying on the floor may be dangerous as electricity conducts horizontally on the flat surfaces.
• Avoid touching fences or iron cables: Electricity conducts easily through metals or phone lines.
• Do not stand in groups: If you are outside with a group, then do not huddle together. Stand at least 100 feet apart from each other.
• First aid: Provide CPR as soon as someone gets struck by lightning. The body struck by lightning does not conduct electricity, so do not be afraid to give first aid.
• No point in removing metal ornaments: You cannot save yourself by taking off metal ornaments or a wrist watch during a thunderstorm.
• Inside the car: The metal body of the vehicle could protect the passengers who are inside; however, do not roll down the window.
• Avoid using land phones: It is dangerous to use land phones that are connected using wires. Do not use mobile phones when they are connected to the charger.
• Cut off electricity: Remove the plug of electronic appliances like the TV and computer from the socket. Stabilisers cannot repel lightning.
• Contact with water: Avoid bathing or washing utensils during a thunderstorm. Electricity may be conducted through the water in the tap. Get out of swimming pools or ponds immediately.
