'Work-from-resort' trend catches on in Kerala

A good number of office employees have been working from home over the last few months in view of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. They were initially excited over the new arrangement but many soon became weary sitting all the time confined to the interiors of their houses.

With a return to the office ruled out, for the time being, workers are being offered a new option by resorts. In fact, ‘Work from resort’ is the latest alternative for office personnel who wish to be away from home during their working hours.

For those who wonder whether they could afford the steep room rents charged by resorts, there is good news. Many resorts have come up with attractive packages that offer rooms at affordable rates.

The benefits of working from a resort include a peaceful environment, hassle-free high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity, and office furniture. For guests wishing to work near the pool or on private beaches, chairs and tables would be provided. In most resorts, the rates for a week’s stay start from around Rs 7,000. Resort owners also feel that this package would enable them to recover the losses suffered following the lockdown imposed as part of the COVID-19 control measures.

One resort that offers the package is 'Cliff Stories' at Varkala. According to the authorities at the resort, there has been a good response to the package. “We clean the room several times a day. In addition, thermal scanning, social distancing, and other safety measures are in place,” they said.

However, people in quarantine are not allowed to utilize the package. For them, several hotels in major cities offer rooms and other facilities. For instance, there are 60 hotels in Ernakulam where quarantined persons can stay at a daily rent of Rs 700-3,750.
