This year’s boat race season has already begun in Kerala with the Champakkulam Moolam vallamkali, which was held on July 9. In the next few months, the state will stage numerous big and small boat races, including the iconic Nehru Trophy Boat Race, to captivate those who love the spectacle. Enjoying such events in Kerala is largely about blending in with the local people, understanding their spirit, sharing the excitement, and, most of all, smart planning. The dates for quite a few of these events have already been finalised, though others are yet to be confirmed. If you are planning to experience the events’ thrill up close, here’s what you should know.

What about tickets?
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR) is the only ticketed event of the lot. The rest are all walk-in events where spectators get to enjoy them from the shores of the venues. The NTBR tickets will soon be sold via various government offices in Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. At times, galleries are also set up for foreign tourists at certain events.
