Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the latest edition of the Nehru Trophy boat race at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala, at 2 pm today.
Twenty snake boats will compete for the coveted trophy. The heats will start at 11 am and the final race is scheduled at 5 pm.
All traffic has been banned from 7 am to 7 pm along the roads from District Court North Junction eastwards to Thathampally Kayal Kurissady Junction.
The Congress had criticised the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government for inviting Shah to the prestigious event.
This year’s boat race will take place on September 4 at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha district of Kerala.
Sriram at first deputed the Additional District Magistrate to attend the meet held at Alappuzha Collectorate last evening but turned up as the discussions began.
The inaugural leg of the snake-boat races will be held at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha alongside the iconic Nehru Trophy Boat Race on September 4.
This is the first race to be held in the last three years. The race could not be held in 2020 and 2021 on account of the coronavirus pandemic.
The 2011 race had culminated in a photo finish between Devas and Karichal.
