Coming soon: Jeep Compass Trailhawk, to target off-road enthusiasts

Off-road enthusiasts have some reason to rejoice. The launch of the off-road focused version of US car maker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Jeep Compass - Trailhawk - is likely to be unveiled before the end of this year itself.

And, most likely, it could go on sale from early next year. It is understood that the company delayed the launch of the vehicle to recalibrate the engine for the BS-VI pollution norms that kick in by 2020.

Ahead of the launch, the car maker has already started testing the Compass Trailhawk in India. The model was displayed during a meeting of dealers too. Besides, the Compass Trailhawk is already produced for right-hand drive markets like Japan and Australia.

The Trailhawk will be the top variant in the Compass range and is equipped with off-roading features. For those who take off-roading seriously, the Trailhawk gets the active drive low-range four-wheel technology. It also promises a new 'rock mode' for its Selec-Terrain 4WD system. Moreover, the Trailhawk gets higher ground clearance than the regular Compass.

At the same time, technically there are no changes; the Trailhawk gets the same 2-litre diesel engine that powers the standard Compass. The engine that churns out 173bhp is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Though there are no clues about the price, it is expected that compared to the standard Compass, the Trailhawk could see a possible increase of Rs 2.5 lakh. In India, the Trailhawk will take on the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Isuzu MU-X.
