Thiruvananthapuram: With Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announcing the Centre’s plan to set up 157 new nursing colleges in co-location with the existing medical colleges, the Idukki and Konni Medical colleges from Kerala are hopeful of getting the same.

These two colleges, which started the MBBS courses this year, have no nursing colleges in co-location presently.

The authorities have sought the nod of the National Medical Commission to commence the MBBS course at Wayanad Medical College. Similarly, they will approach the commission in the case of Kasaragod Medical college where building construction has got over. The Centre can consider these Medical Colleges too while deciding on the new nursing colleges.

Though the Centre had announced in the earlier budget that it would allow one medical college for two districts, the same is yet to be implemented in the case of Kerala. It didn’t even reply to the request of the state in this regard.
