Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Government is contemplating a move to carry out the admissions to all medical graduate and post-graduate courses solely through central allotment. The move follows a direction in this regard by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The State Health department and the Director of Medical Education have received a letter from the Medical Counselling Committee, the agency mandated for central allotments, intimating about the move.
In response, the Government has decided to point out the issues the move could create in the state, including that pertaining to seat reservation.

The Kerala Government is concerned about the effective implementation of the state’s reservation policy if the Centre takes over the allotment process.
It is also expected to convey the present situation in which admission to the graduate and post-graduate courses has already begun for the year. Though a direction with regard to making central allotment to all medical seats had been issued in the previous year too, no follow-up steps were initiated then, the authorities pointed out.
Admission to 15 percent of the MBBS seats in the Government Medical Colleges and 50 percent of the post-graduate seats are currently done through the All India counselling. The Centre proposes to extend this to all seats, including that of the self-financing colleges from the year 2023-24.
As part of the move, the letters sent to the Health department and the Director of Medical Education have also sought details on the existing reservation formula and other related points.
