For over a century, a Malayali has been sweetening the taste buds of Chennai city. The cool delicacy, which the Chennaites can’t praise enough, does not need much of an introduction; not even its name! It's simply known and loved by generations, and has become proof that high-quality, clean, and delicious food speaks for itself, even across the oceans.

Welcome to Kunhiraman General Store, nestled in the heart of Royapuram, where ice cream is a legacy.

The store is now run by Akhilesh Bhaskaran, a third-generation member of the family. It was originally founded in 1925 by his grandfather C Kunhiraman, a native of Vadakara. Though it started as a provision store, today, it sells more ice cream than groceries.

The turning point came in the 1950s, shortly after Kunhiraman’s passing, when mango ice cream was introduced. It quickly became a hit, especially among the Anglo-Indian community in Royapuram. With no flashy branding or marketing, the ice cream’s fame spread entirely by word of mouth as its taste spoke louder than any label ever could.

Made with real mango pulp and zero artificial preservatives, the ice cream must be consumed within five days. Another seasonal favourite is the jackfruit ice cream, crafted from premium jackfruit handpicked by Akhilesh himself. Over time, the store added more flavours like chocolate and vanilla, while staying true to its commitment to quality.

Akhilesh, a former techie, credits the store’s success to uncompromising standards of hygiene and taste. As demand grew, a second outlet was opened at Perambur SRP Colony.

Besides ice cream, the store also offers a range of chilled treats such as mango milk, pista milk, grape juice and chocolate milk. Prices remain accessible as two-scoops serving in a paper cup costs just Rs. 60. It’s a treat that cools your body and warms your heart—without burning your pocket.

Kunhiraman General Store is located on North Terminus Road, Royapuram.
