The refreshing watermelon has also become a staple for iftars, adding a refreshing dose of hydration. Times are such that we consume watermelon in various forms, like juice and popsicles, as well as grilled and pickled watermelons. However, do you know that there are also numerous benefits to consuming other parts of the fruit? John Sherry Anandasseri, Retired Kerala Assistant Director at the Agriculture Department, explains:
The white rind
Watermelon lovers have often wondered whether they can eat the rind as well. Health experts say that both the crimson flesh and the white rind are safe to consume. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the rind has less sugar, more fibre, and the amino acid citrulline, which is incredibly good for health.
Why eat with seeds
Diabetes patients are generally advised to limit their intake of watermelon. However, if they can't do without it, they can consume watermelon with the seeds for health benefits. Others can opt to include the fruit along with its seeds, as watermelon seeds are a storehouse of nutrients. Loaded with zinc, the seeds also prevent viral infections. They are also a great natural source of magnesium. If watermelon flesh increases blood sugar levels, the seeds reduce them. The fibres aid digestion. Moreover, watermelon seeds are great for bone and muscle health.
