Unwanted weight gain is the worst fear beauty conscious women battle these days. And it has not been long since a slim physique became a sign of good looks.

Till about a century ago, plump women were considered pretty. Two World Wars changed all that. It is believed that when shortage of food made women thin, the designers of that era turned slim appearance into a beauty statement.

There are numerous teenagers who are depressed over being fatty. But doctors attest that by the time they reach the age of 20, the excess fat would be lost and the young ladies become beautiful.

Several ailments await women if they are anxious about putting on weight. When women reduce food intake, it causes damage to their health. This leads to diseases like anorexia and bulimia which have achieved epidemic status among women around the world. Some ladies even cause regurgitation to check weight-gain. But medical science considers such traits as a psychiatric disease.

How to prevent weight-gain

The tendency to put on weight can be blocked by resorting to some easy steps. Many youngsters have the habit of munching on snacks while watching TV, but according to doctors this is a quick way to add kilos to the body. Moreover, after having such food items, one will not feel hungry. It has also been found to harm the skin.

Food varieties that have to be avoided at all costs or at least reduced include fried items, tubers like potato and cakes.

When eating, chew well and take sufficient time for it. Many people feel that they should eat to their fill. But doctors advise stopping eating before the stomach is full.

In case eating between meals has become an unmanageable habit, fruits and salads can be preferred.

Calories

Energy is measured in calories and a person needs 2,000 units of it per day. When the intake falls to 1,000 calories, body begins to shed weight.

Items having high calories include butter, ghee, pastries, cake, pudding, sweets, soups, sauces, chocolate and dried beans. On the other hand, spinach, fruits and salads have low calorific values.
