Kottayam: The funeral of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state president Uzhavoor Vijayan, who died at a private hospital in Kochi, was held with state honors here on Monday.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, NCP national general secretary Tariq Anwar and many other senior leaders were present at his house in Kurichithanam.
He had been hospitalized since July 11 undergoing treatment for cardiac and gastrointestinal ailments. His health critically deteriorated on Sunday and died at 7 am.
Vijayan entered politics through Kerala Students Union, the students’ wing of Congress. His humorous speeches with a sprinkling of satirical swipes were mass pullers. He shot to the state leadership with his organizational skills, Vijayan played a crucial role in building up NCP in the state.
Vijayan is survived by wife Chandramani Amma, Nediyamattathil, Pallichira and daughters Vandana and Varsha. Ramani is his sister.
