Kottayam: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) former president Uzhavoor Vijayan's wife has been elected vice-president of the Kottayam district unit of the party. The late president's wife, N G Chandramani, was an unexpected choice by the district leadership at a time when countdown has started for the election of a new state president.
The move is seen aimed at elevating Chandramani, at present a state committee member, as state president, party sources say.
The district committee has also ensured the support of minister A K Saseendran for the initiative.
“It was a surprise when the party handed over this responsibility to me; I did not decline it. I'm not sure how long I can be active in politics. However, I will remain a disciplined party worker. When Vijayan dedicated his time entirely to party work, the home was my responsibility,” said Chandramani.
Chandramani, who was a teacher at St. Sebastian's School in Thodupuzha, was unchallenged for the post of district vice-president. Incumbent president T V Baby was re-elected for a fifth term. M P Krishnan Nair was chosen treasurer.
